Student Support

Two students and a faculty member in political science

Community happens in the making

In the Department of Political Science, you’ll find a close-knit community with small classes, an energetic Political Science Club, lively study groups, and a fun undergraduate student lounge. There’s plenty of support and ways to find your fit here.

Academic advising

Right away, you’ll have support at Iowa State from your academic advisor. Your advisor is there to help you make the most of your experience from your first campus visit until graduation. Your political science advisor can help you with your academic plans, connect you to resources on campus, share encouraging tips and guidance for academic success, and more.

Faculty support

Our political science faculty are invested in your success. Come visit us during office hours – we care about helping you make the most of your political science education inside and outside the classroom. Many of our students also have the chance to work closely with faculty support on research, a senior thesis, or other class projects.

Every single political science professor I’ve had brings their own unique teaching style, personal experiences and knowledge, and passion for teaching to the classroom. I am incredibly grateful for the professors.

Career planning

What can you do with your political science degree? You’ll have support here to explore career planning in your orientation class, help from our internship coordinator, and career development education from LAS Career Services. Whether you need guidance for a resume, job and interview search, or salary negotiation, LAS Career Services has the resources to help you succeed.

Scholarships

The Department of Political Science offers more than $40,000 annually in scholarships to our majors. In addition, there are funds available to help students attend academic conferences, study abroad, and conduct research. Learn about our undergraduate awards and graduate studies scholarships and fellowships.

As a political science major, you’ll be part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which offers a variety of scholarships and grants to undergraduate and graduate students. Deadlines vary with the awards.

Connections and experiences

Find your people, build your skills, and make an impact with our many hands-on student experiences. For example, the Political Science Club provides social and career opportunities for students interested in fields related to politics, policy, and international relations. Students from all majors are welcome to join or attend. Read more about the club in an Iowa State Daily story.
